CROSSING THE WAVES: POLAND/IRELAND
An international youth exchange between Cobh Youth Services and Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury (MDK) Bytom, Poland The project, Crossing the Waves: Poland/Ireland was organised as a developing youth education exchange programme in conjunction with the third annual Cobh Maritime Song Festival held in June 2006.
The project, initially devised by Peggy Sue Amison and Kamil Piotrowski, began as a series of shanty workshops in Cobh, County Cork and Bytom, Poland with musician and teacher Anna Górecka-Czarny (Passat) based in Bytom and Cork Shanty Singer, Pat Sheridan (Warp Four). The artists have been working with young people in Cobh and Bytom sharing their knowledge in singing and the history of traditional shanties. Exchange visits involving Anna and Pat to Cobh and Poland made up the first stage of this project, providing a unique opportunity for them to exchange information and skills with their young participants. Crossing the Waves: Poland/Ireland continued to grow, future plans for an interactive website and a co-operative CD project which will be released for the 2008 Cobh Maritime Festival in June 2007 and Wiosenne Szantowisko youth festival in May 2007 are part of phase two.
Crossing the Waves was made possibile with partial support from Cork County Council, Cobh Town Council, The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dublin, Travel and Training grants from the Irish Arts Council and Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury in Bytom, Poland.
